This is Dental All-Stars, where we bring you the best in dentistry on marketing, management, and training. Hello everyone, welcome to your weekly Motivational Moments with Eric Vickery, president of coaching at All-Star Dental Academy. We’ve been in our series of Heroes Are Leaders, Leaders Are Heroes, and we’ve been going through the breakdown of the HEROES acronym, and we’re on the second E in the system.

00:31

This stands for egoless. So it’s a word, I looked it up. And without ego. And the biggest thing that I see with leaders when it comes to lack of influence, lack of the ability to influence, lack of the ability to be magnetic, is the arrogance that can come across. And when you’re arrogant or you have this narcissistic personality that shows up or a cockiness, it really rubs people the wrong way.

00:59

And so again, back to your emotional intelligence, how self-aware are you, how self-aware are you being, when you’re being and you’re engaging with people, what sort of body language are you getting back from them? How are they appreciating your personality? And when you come across with too much ego, it can be deflating to your purpose, to your cause. So how do you combat that? Well, you also have to be a visionary. So on the other side of having ego is this,

01:28

This person who is always casting a vision, yet is realistic with their ability to achieve it. What you don’t want is a dreamer, that’s different. A dreamer is different than a visionary. A visionary is someone who can really communicate effectively where this team is going. So as a leader, if you’re sharing pieces of your vision weekly to maintain your culture, remember where you failed it, where you nailed it? Talk about that. We share pieces of your vision,

01:57

You’re encouraging others in that. You’re sharing in the wins. You’re also sharing in the losses. Where did we lose together? And how do you navigate through it? You know, no matter what disc personality style you are, which we’re gonna get to in a couple weeks, no matter what disc personality style you are, you’re going to have to pay attention to how your confidence comes across. You have to be right on that line of confident, not arrogant. Confident.

02:26

not lacking in confidence. You have to have both. And so being a visionary allows you to express where we’re going together, allows you to share in the pluses and the minuses, but it also gets them fired up and gets the team encouraged into the vision to create action. Now, here’s where your appreciation languages comes into play. Here’s where your encouragement and appreciation for each other comes into play. Put some amazing

02:56

things together with appreciation, you’ll go far. Now with patients, with patients, you gotta come across as confident, but if you come across as cocky, they’re not gonna want to do dentistry with you. They wanna know that you’ve done this before, and they wanna know that you’re excellent at it, but they don’t want someone who just comes across as, I’m the best there ever is, there’s nobody else here that can do it as good as me. And worse off, they’re looking at your teeth, so your teeth better look great.

03:25

And they’re gonna say, well, who did your teeth? Well, if that person was good enough to do your teeth, how are you the greatest ever? You just wanna be one of the best when it comes to your patients. You wanna be come across as confident, not cocky. All right, so this week, be sure to keep your egos in check. Be sure to have fun. Be sure to share vision throughout the week. Challenge yourselves and have a lot of appreciation going on. All right, guys, have a great week. Make it a great one.
