Seattle Study Club: Working Smarter, Not Harder

I had the pleasure this past weekend to visit The Seattle Study Club Symposium (their big annual meeting they hold each year).

Many of you know this group, but for those who don’t, The Seattle Study Club was created by a periodontist to bring general dentists and specialists together to learn and refer. This small idea turned big very fast.

The theme of this year’s event was about dentists “Working Smarter, Not Harder.” The image used to promote the event was of a dentist with a name tag with ‘dentist’ crossed out and CEO added.

The point is, whether you like it our not, you are the CEO of your practice. The buck stops with you. Your staff, your income, your free time are all a result of your choices and decisions.

A very important theme came up: ongoing business training is the key to success. Part of that training is the concept of “on-boarding.” On-boarding is getting your team and new hires up to speed quickly so they can be more effective, and is a critical part of bringing on new staff. An additional benefit of on-boarding is that this type of training has been shown to decrease turnover by 25% or more.

To underline this point, in his lecture HR expert Tim Twigg stated, “The cost of turnover of an employee can easily be a year’s salary.” And he had the data to prove it.

I put together a video that addresses how All-Star Dental Academy phone and scheduling training is part of a simple strategy that enables you and your team to work smarter, not harder.

P.S. If you want Tim’s turnover cost profile and HR quiz, let me know and I will send you a copy.
