This is Dental All-Stars, where we bring you the best in dentistry on marketing, management and training. Hi friends, welcome to your weekly Motivational Moments with Eric Vickery, president of coaching at All-Star Dental Academy. Today I want to talk to you about these mistakes you’re making now. For the last couple weeks we’ve been talking about how to get different results, which means that you are trying new things.

00:28

And when you try new things, you fail. And when you fail, that’s OK. Failure is not the end. In fact, failure and success are forever intertwined. They cannot be separated. If you think about learning to ride a bike, you knew you wanted to do it, your determination factor. You were trying to figure out the mechanism of which it took to get there. So what’s the system? How do I make this work? How do I operate this? And you fell down.

00:56

and you cut yourself open and you cried, you got back up and you kept trying and trying and trying. Just remembered, unless you’re Phoebe from Friends and then you gave up, you didn’t learn how to ride a bike until you’re much, much older. So what I want you to focus on this week is this. If you’re not trying, you’re not growing. If you’re not failing, you’re not growing. John Maxwell says in The Law of the Rubber Band, growth begins at the end of your comfort zone.

01:23

So the law of the rubber band, stretching. When is a rubber band useful? It’s useful when it’s being stretched. So how are you being stretched? Again, there is no coasting. So to be in growth mode, you have to recognize that you’re going to fail in that. Think of a stock market pricing grid. It goes up, it goes a little bit down, goes up bigger than it was, goes a little bit down, goes up a little bit. But it never goes down.

01:52

You never want to see it go below the starting point. And I think in our growth pattern, only until we give up does it go below our starting point. So remember this, if failure and success are forever intertwined, and we’re gonna celebrate our mistakes, here’s what I want you to do this week. The end of this week, beginning of next week, I want you all to go around the room and talk about what was your biggest mistake this week that you learned from because you were attempting to grow. You tried something and you really wanted to make it happen. It just didn’t end up perfect.

02:22

but you’re working on it. You’re still smoothing out the edges and you’re growing in it. You’re never gonna get there until you take a step into something new. You can’t get somewhere you’ve never been before without trying something you’ve never done before. So you’re going to fall down, that’s okay. Dust yourself off, get back up and make it happen. Have a great week and learn how to celebrate those mistakes. And as John Maxwell says, fail forward. We hope you enjoyed this episode of Dental All-Stars. Visit us online.
