Hi friends, welcome to your weekly motivational moments with Eric Vickery, president of coaching at All-Star Dental Academy. This week, I want to talk to you about being effective. You’re only as effective as you can communicate. Many of you have heard me say this over and over and over again. And so I want to simply explain this this way. This comes from Dale Carnegie. This comes from Tony Robbins. I mean, it’s been around forever. Think about it this way. Your success comes from your

00:33

Your skill set, right? Well, you know, I’m a master clinician and people will just flock to me because they know I’m a master clinician or a master at my craft, whatever that is. Well, what we learned from Carnegie was that, well, no, actually, that’s foundational, but it’s only 15% of your success. 85% of your success comes from your people skills, your ability to communicate. Some people call it soft skills, I call it human skills. So think of it this way. You have your master

in the Academy of General Dentistry. You’re MAG, you’re a master at your skill set. You’ve just mastered how to run the schedule. You’ve mastered how to do hygiene, perform a skill. Okay. Now your communication skills, you’re working on. There are five. You’re a 10 skill, but you’re a five communication. Well, when you’re communicating to your customer, to your patient, to your buyer,

01:26

they’re gonna perceive you as what? Are they gonna perceive you as a 10 clinically or because you’re only able to communicate that a five, a five? And so what happens is if you can perform the skill at a 10 but you can only communicate that skill to a five, they perceive you at a five. Now, what you don’t want is to be, you know, skillset one and verbal skill 10 and communication skills 10 because now you’re a phony. So it is foundational to make sure you master your skillset. That is obviously where we want.

01:56

all of our teams master at their skill set. However, we also want that verbal skill to be all the way up to a 10 as well. How do you get there? Well, think about how often you’re working on mastering your skill set. Every single person you encounter, you’re getting better and better and better at your skills. How often are you working on your verbal skills with that? How often are you working on your human skills? How you interact with someone? So remember, you’re only as effective as you can communicate.

02:24

That’s it, you’re only as effective as you can communicate. So, work on your communication this week. Here’s what I want you to think about. How are you making sure that your patient really truly understands what it is you’re trying to communicate to them, that you wanna implement your skill with them, that you wanna treat them, that you wanna care for them? So how do you know if they’re really getting it? How can you make sure that that’s effective when you communicate? So, you can do check-ins.

02:52

Again, we’ve been talking a lot about the word how. You could say to the patient, how concerned are you with what we’ve been discussing today? That is a check-in. Yeah, how are you feeling about moving forward with this plan? That is a check-in to move forward. Which of these options are you feeling like is the best option for you to make this affordable for you? You’re checking in, you’re using questions. Always be asking questions. Always be checking in. This will tell you if you’re communicating effectively.
